TOUR DETAILS Medicinal uses: Caffeine is considered a drug, due to the dependence a habitual user can have. High concentrations of caffeine in the body can easily cause death. Scientists have found that habitual use of coffee has been related to bladder and colon cancer, and higher cholesterol in the blood. When taken in moderation, caffeine acts as a brain stimulant for a time, after which sleepiness kicks in. Surprisingly, caffeine has been proven to ward off coma-like symptoms in circumstances of snakebite. Caffeine in the body increases adrenaline concentration, giving a sense of energy to the drinker. It has also been known to help ease digestion by producing more stomach acid. Caffeine has been known to help battle heart disease, ascites (abdominal swelling) and pleuritic effusion (fluid build-up in the lungs). It also acts as a powerful diuretic.
Mythology/Folklore: To be anatomically correct, coffee beans are actually “coffee seeds” inside the berries of the tree Coffea arabica. The name C. arabica comes from the habit the Arabs had in the 16th century of drinking coffee. The name “coffee” itself comes from Caffa, a province in what once was Abyssinia and now is modern day Ethiopia. The seeds are removed from the berries and roasted to extract the caffeine. The Malays use the leaves rather than the berries, in an infusion, which contains more caffeine. Coffee has a long European history. In 1652, the first coffee shop opened in London. Louis XIV was presented with a coffee tree in 1714. Coffee was considered so necessary in Turkey that not enough coffee supplied to a Turkish wife was considered legal cause for divorce.
Medicinal recipe: Dried Coffee Berry Tea, aka Cascara: Take the dried husks from the dried berries of the coffee tree, and steep them in water for about 15 or so minutes. Strain out the berries and add honey to sweeten.
Culture: (From staff horticulturalist, Nick Giaquinto) coffee is not hardy to the Colorado climate, and should therefore be grown indoors. If you do want to grow coffee indoors, it prefers indirect light and high humidity. It should be moist, but not drying out or soaking. The soil should be well drained. You can fertilize the tree, every third or fourth watering. C. arabica self-pollinates.
