Sculpted by erosion in Lake Tai in the Yangtze Delta of China, Taihu stones like this one have been admired since the Tang Dynasty (618-907 C.E.) and are likened to tiny mountains. Such stones serve an important role in traditional Chinese gardens, which are often designed to elicit feelings of wandering through miniature versions of wild landscapes.
