A champion tree is the largest tree of each species or cultivar, determined by measure of the tree's spread, height and trunk circumference. In Colorado, the Colorado Tree Coalition oversees the Champion Tree Registry.
Denver Botanic Gardens has over 30 trees on the registry. Each of these trees bears a special label proclaiming its Champion status. The state ranking is noted below each name on the list.
10 new trees were added in 2022, including first place trees Quercus dentata, Quercus fusiformis, Pinus bungeana, Sequoiadendron giganteum 'Pendulum', and Heptacodium miconioides. Champion labels will be added in the coming months.
