Encyclia - From the Greek enkyklein, meaning to encircle or surround
alata - wing-like (fruits), winged (stems with protruding ridges which are wider than thick)
mooreana -named for Lee Moore, 193_-present, "The Adventurer", American plant collector, primarily collecting in South America, Central America and Mexico.
