Woodland Mosaic |
Denver Botanic Gardens Gardens Navigator |
Plants from around the world fill the Woodland Mosaic garden; the shade in the area itself is a marked difference from many of the other gardens at York Street. The garden effectively demonstrates many plants suited for deep shade, often considered to be a difficult condition for home gardeners. The garden also showcases forest structure and ecology as well as the importance of temperate forests to the entire global ecosystem.
Woodland Mosaic is home to a large swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor) and red oak (Quercus rubra). Cutleaf stephanandra (Stephanandra incisa 'Crispa') and black jetbead (Rhodotypos scandens) are two of the oldest shrubs at the Gardens. This garden is one of the few that features several types of ferns. Several taxa of Viburnum also grow here, notably Viburnum carlesii, which is often a show-stopper during bloom.
