Plant Select® is a cooperative program administered by Denver Botanic Gardens and Colorado State University in concert with horticulturists and nurseries throughout the Rocky Mountain region and beyond. The program was implemented to seek out, identify and distribute the very best native and non-native plants for landscapes and gardens from the Intermountain region through the High Plains. Denver Botanic Gardens displays species from this ever expanding list of Plant Select® species throughout this garden space, highlighting the elegance and durability of highly adapted plants to our region.
Given that drought and water shortage issues are becoming increasingly problematic locally and world-wide, selecting plants that are naturally suited to Colorado's arid environment leads to a more sustainable way of gardening. Plants in the Plant Select® program are specifically chosen for their adaptability in various garden conditions including low water, multi-season interest and durability in Colorado's climate. This garden was built and planted in 2010 in the space which previously was known as the Monet Garden. The garden received Plant Select's® Showcase Garden Award in 2010 "for the creation and maintenance of an exceptional public Plant Select® Demonstration Garden."
