Lilacs (genus Syringa) have come a long way. Originally from Europe and Asia, lilacs have been cultivated and bred for centuries in gardens throughout the world because of their showy and fragrant clusters of flowers. There are many different species of lilacs and hundreds of cultivated varieties, ranging in size from dwarf shrubs to small trees and blooming throughout the color spectrum of blues, purples, pinks and whites.
Lilacs flower from late spring to early summer, making this garden a must see from April to June. Herbaceous understory plantings, bulbs and grasses thread the garden together, demonstrating dense, attractive and complementary combinations of foliage, flowers and textures throughout the entire year. Also, don’t forget to “watch your step” for even more beauty. The garden pathway is a living tapestry of low water, steppable plants. A mixture of dwarf, fine-leaved fescues, Veronica, thyme and Helichrysum provide a lush, flowering pathway for visitor’s to enjoy as they traverse the garden.
