![]() The Romantic Gardens includes Schlessman Plaza and the Fragrance Garden. These three gardens feature a more formal design than the native gardens. The Fragrance Garden and adjacent Schlessman Plaza is a popular wedding site during the summer months.
The Fragrance Garden displays fragrant flowers along a paved walkway and a raised bed area. Favorite plants in this area include members of the mint family and roses. Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Yellow Ribbon') line the formal lawn. Schlessman Plaza features two brick and stucco gazebos and Tuscan style rustic columns. A mix of flowering perennials and shrubs are flanked by ornamental weeping crabapple trees (Malus x scheideckeri 'Red Jade'). These gardens were designed by Environmental Planning and Design of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania between 1997 and 1999 and were constructed in 2000. The planting design was provided by Lauren Springer Ogden. For a list of plants in the Fragrance Garden, click here. |
